Our October meeting was held on Zoom due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Despite the challenges created by meeting online, it is also proving beneficial with members joining form as far afield as Bendigo. It is fantastic that after only five meetings the member numbers are growing and the group is connecting with people from all over Victoria.
Our guest this meeting was Peter Mac’s dietitian Darcy. Darcy spoke about the unique challenges faced by head and neck cancer patients and their carers during and post treatment. Darcy’s hints and tips around managing weight loss, nutrition and eating difficulties triggered some great questions from those within the group who have recently completed their treatment. Some members who are a few years post treatment added to Darcy’s comments by sharing their own personal experiences and tips.
Darcy introduced the group to a cook book called Beyond the Blender. This great cook book, authored by Simone Howells and Griffith University Master of Speech Pathology Students, provides a range of savoury and sweet options for people with swallowing difficulties and their families and friends. Our last meeting for the year is on the 9th December – it’s hard to believe the end of the year is here already! Please be sure to register and join the group as we hear from Head and Neck Cancer Australia’s Nadia Rosin, and discuss the agenda for the 2021 meetings.
